RUDY JR’S LEGACY

IT TAKES A VILLAGE TO RAISE A CHILD:  An African proverb meaning it takes an entire community of people to interact with children for those children to grow up in a safe and healthy environment.

The Village approach is used by many families, especially single-parent families, or those of dual working parents.  The need to rely on grandparents, older siblings, aunts, uncles, babysitters/day care, neighbors, even church family to help meet the needs of a family is undeniably necessary in this busy world.

Rudy enlisted in the USMC and was assigned to Twenty-Nine Palms Marine Corp Base in Twenty-Nine Palms, CA. He returned to Twenty-Nine Palms subsequent to returning from his deployment to Afghanistan and became familiar with the Palm Springs, CA area.  Upon completing his military service, he later entered treatment in that area and subsequently opted to make his home in Palm Springs.  Eventually he attended school and obtained his certification as a Substance Abuse Counselor.

During Rudy’s own journey, his many ups and some downs, he became enlightened to the staggering and increasing numbers of people experiencing homelessness for a variety of reasons, including the challenges that accompany the disease of alcoholism and addiction, mental health barriers and physical disabilities, and realized the concept of ‘IT TAKES A VILLAGE’ applies not just to families with children, but for all of God’s children. Consequently, Rudy’s passion to help others became his primary goal believing that EVERYONE is deserving of a “safe and healthy environment” regardless of their journey; God charges those with the means and abilities to provide for the lost, lonely, sick and less fortunate.

His goal: To open a sober-living house where individuals could begin their road to recovery with the help of their community.

His Vision: To provide whole-person wraparound services that meet all needs of an individual in the effort to create autonomy, happiness, and purpose to include a home and support system, coaching and connection to employment, social services, SS & VA benefits, health care, public transportation and an array of other case management services provided by well-qualified personnel at (initially) ZERO cost to the client.

His Mission: To enlighten, educate, and engage organizations, government social service programs and faith-based groups and create a collaborative partnership to reach his vision of “The Village”, or “Building A Bridge” with the help of a Village.

Unfortunately, attaining these essentials of life takes an average of 4 months while the wheels of “real life” turn slowly.  Rudy accomplished the first step by furnishing a house and opened a Sober-Living House in Palm Springs, CA.  He was in the beginning stages of soliciting donations and support by connecting with City officials for funding and resources and invited friends and associates in the business of providing services in recovery to be a part of his Village.

Once successful with the first goal, he planned to reach out to the homeless communities and provide services, such as mobile showers, food truck, clothing drives, cell phones, schedule appts, securing housing, detox, treatment, etc.  Rudy was already doing some of these things; he believed everyone just wanted and needed to be seen and heard.

Although Rudy diligently fought and won many battles against his own disease over the years, and for reasons not fully understood by those of us who loved and respected him most, he sadly lost “the war” and recently passed away before he could fully complete his mission and vision.

Through hard work and commitment, the new managers have (so far) kept the doors open to the now named Rudy’s At The Harbor Sober-Living House, and are offering beds and recovery services for up to 16 clients at a time.  Most of these men do not have, or no longer have, a “Village” to help them beyond these doors.

A bed at Rudy’s At The Harbor Sober-Living House costs $900 per month.  During the clients’ residency, volunteers and staff work hard to reintegrate these men back into a stable lifestyle by implementing the services described above.  Many will have just
completed a residential treatment program and starting from scratch while others may have been evicted due to the rent being raised along with exorbitant cost of living expenses, medication, etc.  Regardless of the reason, people just need some help to begin again.  Temporary support may be all that is missing, and this offers the ever-important last leg of supervised recovery while transitioning toward self-sufficiency and a purpose-driven life.

Currently we are creating an interactive website where you will be able to see updates, read blogs, view videos, and even meet some of the clients. Please feel free to reach out to one of Rudy’s best friends and now-manager of the program, Jeremy Randall; he is driven to carry out Rudy’s mission and loves talking to anyone and everyone about how they will do that. Feel free to reach out and text/call at his personal phone number, (949) 939-5018.

Anchored Life Recovery Services has a Board of Directors who will maintain financial records and oversee the expenditures to assure all donations/sponsorships are covering the expenses of the clients.   We invite you to visit the sober-living house, meet the clients and converse with the staff.  This can be done by coming by for an actual visit to our facility or via cards, zoom, website, and photos.   The application process for establishing our non-profit status is in the works.

We believe that personal connections are important for a more successful outcome in recovery.  It’s a part of the emotional development and compassion that makes us ALL healthier humans; a WIN-WIN scenario.  Many of you already donate to non-profit organizations but don’t always know how your dollars are being spent or who they are helping.  Financial sponsors will be able to see WHO, HOW, WHAT and WHERE their generosity is going and how it is already changing lives.  Any amount will help towards providing the essentials needed.

We, Rudy’s family, associates and friends ARE COMMITTED TO HONORING RUDY’S LEGACY by supporting Rudy’s At The Harbor Sober-Living House, an entity of the Anchored Life Recovery Services, LLC.

We Invite YOU to join our Village.  Anyone who joins us will no doubt benefit from this experience and we look forward to working with you in fulfilling Rudy’s goal, mission and vision.

Sincerely,

Rudy’s nieces and nephews, understood their Uncle’s/Tio’s character, dreams, goals, and passion, as did his friends, family, friends in recovery, and Marine brothers.

Christian: “I call it Building Bridges.  Tio Rudy was a gentle man with a soft heart who had the mind and courage of a true leader.  He taught me not to judge people as they appeared to be but to dig deeper to know their story. He wanted to be the bridge to help those who struggled, to provide them with a home and a family.”
Karina L: “Tio Rudy did everything he could to help those less fortunate, those in need”.  I promise to continue in his footsteps and do my part in helping others”.

Elena (10 years old): “He sat with me at the table in the middle of the night to teach me how to multiply and write in cursive. He came to my house every night he was in town to spend time with us, play with us, brought us gifts and told me my dance routine was professional.”
